After
Babar's mother was killed by the hunter, he went to
the big city. These pictures are copied directly
from the books so you see the dot screen. You can
also see that their original language was French.
In the city, Babar had
the good fortune to meet an old lady who liked little
elephants and helped him with a timely gift of money.

When the King of the Elephants
dies from eating a poison mushroom, Babar goes back to the
jungle and is asked to become the new king. He agrees, on
condition that his cousin, Celeste, can be queen. They get
married, the Old Lady comes to live with them, and all
together they start to build the glorious capital of the
elephants, Celesteville. Who are those other people?

Babar bought new
clothes, started learning to read and write, and soon he
was giving after-dinner talks at the Old Lady's house
about his experiences in the jungle. If you want to see

You will notice (if you know French) that Jean de
Brunhoff still thought of Babar as Bebe (Baby) Elephant.
